First to Rise - Ocotillo Film Premiere

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1

@ 12 PM, 1 PM, 2PM, & 3PM

This short film tells the story of 5th generation rancher Alyssa Martinez Hind. Alyssa breaks the mold of the stereotypical "cowboy".

Though an entire genre has been dedicated to Western life, that of cowboys, and ranchers - the people who serve as inspiration aren't always portrayed quite accurately.

"First to Rise" is a short film tells the story of 5th generation rancher Alyssa Martinez Hind. Alyssa breaks the mold of the stereotypical South Texas rancher. She’s tough, straightforward, and doesn’t put up with B.S. It’s a simple way of living, but it’s honest work and what she’s best at.

The first in a two-part series that dives deeper into telling the story of current working ranchers, rodeo talent, cowboys, and cowgirls, Ocotillo Films dives into the culture for a more honest portrayal.

A project sponsored by Desert Door Texas Sotol, we're eager to share Alyssa's story with you through a few intimate gatherings featuring the film and Q&A with its cast and crew at The Carpenter Hotel this November.

We will be hosting 4 sets of premieres throughout this event, an hour each, which are limited to 14 people each round. Your ticket includes a Desert Door cocktail and snacks provided by The Carpenter Hotel. This event will be held in the Q-Hut, an event space/courtyard pavilion located on the East Side off of our property off Josephine Street.

Meet the Maker: Mercedes Rex

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8

1-3 PM

The FIRST ONE WENT SO WELL, WE'RE DOING ANOTHER.

Join us for an afternoon of exploring water marbling with textile artist Mercedez Rex. We will cover a brief history of marbling as well as classic patterns before diving in to experiment with basic techniques of manipulating paints on the surface of a water bath. Each participant will have their own marbling vat and time to practice learned techniques and color combinations before transferring their designs to both paper and silk textiles.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:  Mercedez Rex is an artist and creativity advocate. She believes that everyone has creative potential and that cultivating creativity is a worthwhile pursuit. Her goal in teaching workshops is to encourage others to tap into their own creativity. She does this first and foremost, by offering guidance and instruction on a craft she is passionate about but more importantly by fostering an environment that values playful experimentation and process over comparison, perfectionism, and fear of failure.

It is a cautionary tale meant to inspire people from every walk of life to take action and work toward the change that can happen if informed citizens and those in power hold oil and gas companies accountable.
